THANKS FOR GARDENING

Thanks to all those who joined us for gardening on Saturday 6 November.

There were 9 of us who gardened in the Wildlife and Sensory Garden in Lorrimore Sqauare. Some who couldn't attend lent us their brown bins which we very much appreciated as there was a lot of garden to clear after a summer of really good growing conditions.

We cut back overgrown plants, cleared and raked the paths, and jet-washed the circular bench around the tree.

Thanks to everyone who supported us!

CAMPAIGN TO CLEAN UP CARTER STREET

For years the area on Carter Street next to St Peter's Primary School has been a dumping ground. The TRA used its annual grant funding to put a planter in the space near the containers to discourage fly-tippers in 2016. Initially this worked but the area went back to being a dumping ground soon afterwards. We applied under Cleaner Greener Safer to fill the whole area with a flower bed and put the bins on Carter Street itself (like the other communal bins so no reduction of parking spaces). We were not successful in the last round of bids. The TRA is taking photos daily to show the extent of the problem. We will be applying for funding again this autumn. This level of rubbish anywhere is unpleasant. Right next to a primary school it is unacceptable.

 FORSYTH GARDENS IS BLOOMING MARVELLOUS!

 VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS

The TRA pre-empted Southwark Council and carried out an audit of street lights in our area on 16 March to make the area as safe as possible. 2 lights were found not to be working in Forsyth Gardens. This was reported to the council and repaired within 48 hours. Please let the TRA know if you believe there are further safety improvements we can make.

The council has issued the following statement:

The events of the last few weeks has left us, like many others, angry at the gender-based violence that women and girls face every day. Our thoughts are with all those who knew Sarah Everard, and with all victims and survivors of gender based violence. We are urgently thinking about how we can make Southwark a safer place for women and girls and secure the long term change we need. We have called an emergency meeting of all councillors where we will be discussing actions the council can take and bringing an emergency motion to Council Assembly this week. This will include assessing areas of our streets where we can make immediate safety improvements so please do let us know if there are areas in Newington you are concerned about.

 THANKS FOR GARDENING!

We had a great day with 20 different people helping out - many hands make light work!

We can all relax now and watch the new plants grow. Plants were bought from our annual TRA grant which is given to us by Southwark Council.
