Annual Picnic in the Park

Many thanks to all of you who came to the Annual TRA Picnic in the Park at the beginning of July! First year ever that we had no rain (almost...), which certainly seemed to help with turnout as the park was full of people. Once again the bouncy castle was a big hit, whilst the food and drink disappeared as quickly as it arrived.




The picnic was also the official 'launch' of the new artwork in Lorrimore Gardens - provided courtesy of the children at John Ruskin School, under the supervision of Sue. Hopefully you all agree that it looks fantastic, and has brightened up that corner of the park no end. 1. Chair opened meeting, noted apologies

2. Chair’s Report:

• This month has again chased Cleaner, Greener, Safer (CGS). There has been a delay in response due to a delay in response from EDF Energy who are responsible for the lighting. We now have agreement on the lighting from EDF Energy. CGS are estimating that they need approx 2 months to prepare, and then EDF can install the lamp-posts. After this CGS can start the landscaping. Current estimates for project completion are Autumn 2010
• Heritage Lottery Fund Grant for heritage boards
• Met with Steve Callaghan (head of parks team) and we are currently waiting for formal response for sign-off. We cannot submit the final application until this is received.
• Tony will continue to chase for sign-off so that application can be submitted (ACTION)
• Picnic in the Park:
• Article submitted to Southwark Housing News, which will appear in July’s issue
• Picnic submitted as an event on the Southwark Council website
• Cath has organised the bouncy castle and Southwark Community Games (cricket and football)
• Tables and electricity has been organised
• Budget of £100 for food and drinks was agreed
• Jeanette / Jo will order and arrange for food to be prepared (ACTION)
• Tony to speak to John regarding the picnic advertising banner (ACTION)
• Varnishing of the statues in the park:
• Tony / Marcus to look into getting this completed
• Painting of the gates / fences (ACTION):
• Tony has requested a contact at Southwark (through Steve Callaghan), if we don’t receive a response we will look into getting the gates re-painted. (ACTION)
• Lorrimore Road Redevelopment:
• Response to council was submitted
• Tony and Marcus have been in touch with 3 local councillors (Neil Coyle, Patrick Diamond and Cathy Bowman). There is a planning meeting on 1st June, and our concerns will be raised through the councillors. They will recommend a delay, in order to enable a site visit which will include local residents.
• We hope to receive an update on 2nd June

3. Treasurer’s Report:

• Have received the tenants fund, and we have paid the insurance

4. Any other business:

• Friends of Pasley Park:
• Tony and Marcus attended the AGM
• The Friends group has received a CGS grant to cover an art memorial to the zoo, and a feasibility study to look into potential development for the future
• Forum is set up to make decisions regarding the park; Tony and Marcus encouraged attendance from our TRA to ensure that our views are considered
• Safer Neighbourhoods Team (for Newington Ward):
• Marcus attended, please see blog for more details
• Next leaflet:
• Marcus to design a newsletter, which will be used in conjunction with the quarterly leaflet
• We will also look to publish this on Southwark Housing for further opportunities to publicise the TRA/TRA events through Southwark Housing News and Southwark Life
• Plants for the church:
• Marcus will order the plants using the previously agreed budget of £100

5. Next meeting – the next meeting will be held on 6 July 2010; this will be the picnic and held in Lorrimore Square Park

Kennington Village Fete - 2010

Kennington Village Fete will be taking place, once again, in Cleaver Square (or St Anselm's Church if wet) on Sunday, 13th June from 12.30 - 4.00 pm.

It looks to be a packed programme, with plenty to do, buy and eat. Fingers crossed for good weather!

Annual Picnic in the Park

As many of you who have been here for a while will know, the TRA runs a Picnic in the Park every July.

It's always a great evening, with free food, drink - and entertainment for the kids (including a bouncy castle, plus cricket and football).

This year's picnic will be held from 6.00 pm on Tuesday, 6th July in Lorrimore Gardens - the park in Lorrimore Square.

1. Chair opened meeting, noted apologies

2. Chair’s Report:

• Chased Cleaner, Greener, Safer (CGS) over timing of work, no response yet. He will continue to chase (ACTION)
• Heritage Lottery Fund Grant for heritage boards:
  Final costs and information regarding consultation process received from Cumming Museum. The consultation process will involve at least 2 adult and 1 child workshop, including a walkabout of the area
  Meeting planned for 18/05/2010 with project team and Southark council parks department for parks sign-off, and confirmation that they will maintain the signs
• Final application to be submitted at the end of May
• Tony handed out copy of application; it may take up to 1 year from approval for the project to be completed
• Picnic in the Park:
• Tony has contacted Southwark Life with regards to covering the Picnic in the Park in July. Have received a positive response from Southwark Housing News, who will cover the event and art project.
  Sue to send photos of the children working on the art project. (ACTION)
• Deadline for providing information to Southwark Housing News is 28 May
• Agreed date for picnic will be 6 July, starting at 6pm
• Cath to organise children’s entertainment including bouncy castle, and investigate Southwark community games (ACTION)
  Volunteers for food preparation are Janette, Simon, Sue, Megan and Cath (ACTION)
• Tony to speak to Graham regarding use of electricity and tables
• Website - nearly 500 visitors to website since launch
• Film location - most websites are looking for properties not entire locations; will continue to look

3. Treasurer’s Report:

• Positive balance, with £1000 due to come out for art project

4. Any other business:

• Art Project:
• 12 children involved. Sue has been enlarging templates and preparing the boards
• Boards in the electricity sub-station have been taken down
• Sue to put up notice on sub-station with an invitation to send drawing to Sue, in case local children using the park also want to take part (ACTION)
• Will review whether to grow climbers (e.g. ivy) up sub-station
• Sculptures in the park / Park maintanence:
• Have received an offer to varnish them
• John to agree and arrange (ACTION)
• Tony to write to Southwark council to get them to paint the park fence (ACTION)
• Redevelopment of 113 Lorrimore Road:
• Tony explained the proposed redevelopment, which will be 4 x 5 bed houses, designated as affordable housing
• The consultation ended at the end of April
• Tony has emailed the council to inform them of the TRA meeting, and that we will submit a response as a group after this meeting.
• Issues that will be raised in the response:
• Parking – this will increase strain on current limited parking in Lorrimore Road
• Architecturally in keeping / character of area / currently not many other large properties in area
• Potential of space to cater for more families
• How will local area benefit, e.g. TRA hall
• Lack of response from statutory bodies, e.g. environment department
• Agreed that the TRA recognises the need for housing, but above points need to be answered
• Tony to email response, so that everyone can comment before formally submitting (ACTION)
• Engineering works for Northern Line causing more people outside tube at the weekends:
• Marcus informed that council are putting new bins outside the tube and will ensure that these are emptied more regularly
• Marcus warned of ‘taxi touts’ at the weekend
• General bins on Lorrimore Road - Marcus has chased the council, and has not received a response yet
• Safer Neighbourhoods meeting - Marcus will attend this meeting on 26 May; which will be discussing safer neighbourhoods
• Leaseholder Forum - Megan raised that she had received a nomination form. Megan to show Tony the letter. Tony to investigate (ACTION)
• Housing Area Forum - John offered up a place at the forum. Our TRA is not regularly in attendance.

5. Next meeting – the next meeting will be held on Tuesday 8 June, 7.30 pm in St Paul’s, Lorrimore Square. This meeting will not be leafleted, but will be advertised via e-mail and on the website as normal.

Spring Plant Sale

It's that time of year again...

For every Saturday and Sunday in May, the Walworth Garden Farm will be running its annual plant sale where a variety of bedding plants, herbs and small shrubs (all grown by trainees at the Farm itself) will be available to buy at great prices

The Farm (located on the corner of Braganza Street and Manor Place) will be open starting this week on the 1st, with staff on hand to chat about the work of the Farm in general as well as to offer gardening tips and advice.

Let's hope the weather stays nice for it!
